How to Style Cushions on a Sofa

A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

Cushions are one of the easiest ways to transform a living room. Whether your style is cosy and relaxed or clean and modern, the right cushion arrangement can make a sofa feel styled, balanced, and inviting.

But how many should you use? Should colours match? Can you mix patterns?

---

Step 1: Choose How Many Cushions You Want

As a simple rule, odd numbers often look more natural and relaxed and it also allows you to choose a centred ‘feature’ cushion with a bit of extra personality.

Minimal look |  2–3 cushions. Clean, modern, uncluttered.

Balanced everyday look | 4–5 cushions. Comfortable, styled, practical.

Cosy layered look | 6–9 cushions. Relaxed, luxurious, inviting.

This also depends on the size of your sofa - so let your sofa guide the styling rather than forcing a particular layout.

---

Step 2: Start layering in…largest cushions first

Always build from the back forward. Place the largest cushions in the corners of the sofa, next add slightly smaller cushions in front of the large ones. This creates depth and makes the arrangement feel intentional rather than random.

The smaller cushion might have:

• Different textures

• Subtle pattern changes

• Colour variation but within the same palette

The best bit - add a Feature Cushion! This could have a bolder pattern, gorgeous frills, be a different shape. Place it in the centre or slightly off-centre for a relaxed feel. This cushion draws the eye and ties the whole arrangement together.

Texture and pattern is what makes cushion styling feel rich and inviting. Follow this simple rule: Combine large patterns, small patterns, and plain fabrics.

Step 3: Mix Colours

Colour is a hugely important one for me as I love putting colours together to bring calm, warmth or a bit of personality to a room.

As a rule, I look at the background or base colour of the fabric on your cushions, you want them to pair together nicely. It might be a fresh off white, warmer cream tone or a bolder colour, all your cushions should have the same or complimentary base tones.

Then think about your room, can you connect the colours in the cushions to something in your room (wall colours, a rug, a piece of art)? Not a perfect colour match but colours that work together. Repeating colours around the room makes everything feel harmonious.

An accent colour, used sparingly often adds interest and energy, or keep the colours all similar for a lovely calm feel.

So in a nutshell…Start with size, build layers, mix texture, and keep colours connected to the room. With just a few thoughtful choices, your sofa can become the focal point of your living space.

The best part? Cushion styling is easy to refresh whenever you want a new seasonal look or a simple room update.
